IDLE HANDS – IDLE SOULS

2 THESSALONIANS 3:6-15

7 Habits of Highly Defective People

A Sermon Series on the 7 Deadly Sins

Pride – Greed – Lust – Anger – Gluttony – Envy – Sloth

The Sin of Sloth

“One who is slack in his work is brother to the one who destroys.” Proverbs 18:9

“The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work. All day long he craves for more…” Proverbs 21:25

“Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.” Proverbs 12:24

“I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.” Proverbs 24:30-34

Sloth – An aversion to hard things. Laziness

Sloth can take the form of fear (“I might get hurt”),

fatigue (“I am too tired”), and failure (“I tried that once”).

Sloth is a sin which believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing and only remains alive because there is nothing it would die for.”

– Dorothy Sayers

Two Kinds of Sloth:

1.) Refusing to work on earthly tasks.

2.) Refusing to work on heavenly tasks.

·        Where do you find yourself being slothful?

Sloth <> Courage = Diligence

The Virtues of Courage & Diligence

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” Romans 12:11

·        How is your spiritual fervor?  Lacking or Intense

“…The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put on the armor of light.” Romans 13:11-12

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” Hebrews 6:10-13

“For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: ‘If a man will not work, he shall not eat.’ We hear that some of you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. And as for you brothers, never tire of doing what is right.”

2 Thessalonians 3:10-13

A CURE FOR GREEN SICKNESS

GENESIS 37

The Sin of Envy

Envy – Wanting what someone else has, or wanting them not to have it.

“Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him…His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.” (V.3-4, 11)

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Proverbs 14:30

“Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy.” Proverbs 27:4

“For he [Pilate] knew it was out of envy that they handed Jesus over to him.”

Matthew 27:18

“Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another.” Galatians 5:26

“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and every evil practice.” James 3:16

·        Envy brings destruction.

·        Envy involves numerous sins.

Envy <> Faith brings Kindness

“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.” 1 Peter 2:1

The Virtues of Faith & Kindness

“At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us…”

Titus 3:3-5

·        Envy is a part of the old self. Faith in Christ allows us to live victoriously over envy.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” 1 Corinthians 13:4

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

·        Envy is centered in selfishness. Kindness is centered in selflessness.

SUPER-SIZED APPETITES

MATTHEW 6:25-34

7 Habits of Highly Defective People

A Sermon Series on the 7 Deadly Sins

Pride – Greed – Lust – Anger – Gluttony – Envy – Sloth

The Sin of Gluttony

Gluttony – The sin of over-consumption.

A desire to indulge oneself beyond the point of need or limit in consuming food.

The behavior of a Glutton is characterized by eating too much, eating too fast, eating too often, and may desire expensive and special foods.

“Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” Proverbs 23:20-21

“He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” Proverbs 28:7

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes...So do not worry, saying ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ Or ‘What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:25-26, 31-33

“Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.” Philippians 3:19

·          A Glutton is one who seeks satisfaction, significance and security through the consuming of food, instead of seeking it in a relationship with God.

The Virtue of Self-control

“If you find honey, eat just enough – too much of it, and you will vomit.” Proverbs 25:16

“’Everything is permissible for me’ – but not everything is beneficial for me. ‘Everything is permissible for me’ – but I will not be mastered by anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and the worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing  of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…” Titus 2:11-13

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given when Jesus is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:13-16

PREVENTING AN ERUPTION

MATTHEW 5:21-26

7 Habits of Highly Defective People

A Sermon Series on the 7 Deadly Sins

Pride – Greed – Lust – Anger – Gluttony – Envy – Sloth

The Sin of Anger

You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders is subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment….But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

(V.21-23)

·        A person’s anger can place them under the same judgment as someone who commits murder.

·

“An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.” Proverbs 29:22

“’In your anger do not sin’: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Ephesians 4:26-27

·        Anger can be unrighteous and righteous.

·        Get control of your anger quickly.

·        Uncontrolled anger can give the Devil a position of destructive influence in your life.

The Four Sources of Our Anger:

          Hurt – Injustice – Fear – Frustration

The Virtue of Patience

“A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.” Proverbs 15:18

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2

“My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you which can save you.” James 1:19-21

·        Be considerate of the needs and opinions of others.

·        Think before you react!

Take Action with Justice & Reconciliation

Seek Justice through a controlled & righteous anger.

“Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. ‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.’” Matthew 21:12-13

Seek reconciliation with God and man.

“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” (V.23-24)

“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.” Ecclesiastes 7:9

A HEART PROBLEM

MATTHEW 5:27-30

7 Habits of Highly Defective People

A Sermon Series on the 7 Deadly Sins

Pride – Greed – Lust – Anger – Gluttony – Envy – Sloth

The Sin of Lust

“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes...Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.” Proverbs 6:25, 27-29

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (V.27-28)

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, and sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Matthew 15:19

·        Lust is a matter of the heart.

·        Lust seeks to replace love.

The Virtue of Love

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:9-10

·        Love leads you to respect and serve.

Lust leads you to dishonor and use.

“…It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” (V.30)

·        We must radically deal with the sin in our lives.

·        We must stop the lust before it moves into the realm of action.
